Who we are?

The Internet Society is an American nonprofit organization founded in 1992 to provide leadership in Internet-related standards, education, access, and policy. Its mission is "to promote the open development, evolution and use of the Internet for the benefit of all people throughout the world

Sri Lanka Chapter of the Internet Society serves the Society’s purposes by serving the interests of a segment of the global Internet community through a local presence; focus on local issues and developments, and use of local languages.

Creating an Internet for everyone everywhere

The Internet Society is a global cause-driven organization governed by a diverse Board of Trustees that is dedicated to ensuring that the Internet stays open, transparent and defined by you.

The Internet is for everyone.

The Internet Society supports and promotes the development of the Internet as a global technical infrastructure, a resource to enrich people’s lives, and a force for good in society.

Our work aligns with our goals for the Internet to be open, globally-connected, secure, and trustworthy. We seek collaboration with all who share these goals.

Our Services

Our Chapter run a varied programme of events, programmes and activities that all work to support our principles and mission, including:

Educational Events

Educating members or the general public about Internet-related issues such as security, broadband access, IPV6, child safety, network neutrality, and much more.

Community Programmes

Ensuring Internet access for economically disadvantaged people or those with disabilities, covering areas such as hardware, software, distribution and best practices.

Public policy programmes

Informing policy and decision makers about Internet issues such as net neutrality, copyright protection, censorship, or human rights.

Networking events

Helping members connect with like-minded people who share an interest in bringing the benefits of the Internet to everyone

Our Regional Activities

Popularization of Internet in Sri Lanka.

Facilitation of research into Localization as well as to promote creation of local content in Sinhala and Tamil on the Internet.

To facilitate research into last mile connectivity to Internet in rural areas in Sri Lanka and to conduct training and awareness workshops in network connectivity in rural areas in Sri Lanka.

To promote closer interaction among ISOC chapter members.

To liaise with other organizations with similar interest.

To create awareness and dialog on Broadband and Internet connectivity issues in Sri Lanka as well as to play an advisory role to government bodies which are involved in creating standards on Internet connectivity and Broadband standards in Sri Lanka.

To create awareness and facilitation of Information and Communication Technology professionals and organizations in Sri Lanka to participate in global bodies/groups such as Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

To promote new standards, Internet technologies and implementation of protocols such as IPV6 while advising government of Sri Lanka to formulate policies on adverse impact of Internet such as child phonography, Internet fraud etc without harming citizens’ right to access and publish content on the Internet.

To promote use of International Domain names of Sri Lanka: Lanka and Ilangai.
